The City of Kent imposes the business taxes below to fund important City services. These taxes are administered by the Tax Division of the Finance Department.

City taxes are filed separately from taxes that a business must file with the State of Washington. Click on the links below to see additional information for each type of tax.

Retailing gross receipts maximum threshold changes

On November 1, 2024, Kent adopted an ordinance to update Kent City Code (KCC) 3.28.050 (effective January 1, 2025) regarding Business & Occupation (B&O) taxable retailing gross receipts.  The change in the code added an annual upper threshold in addition to the taxable gross receipts maximum cap.  When a business exceeds the upper threshold of taxable retailing gross receipts in a calendar year, tax will be imposed on the full annual amount.

Beginning with tax year 2026, the retailing maximum and the upper threshold will be adjusted upward annually using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).  The maximum and the upper threshold amounts are as follows:

The Tax Division reviews filed tax returns for eligible taxpayers after the conclusion of the tax year.  Taxpayers who have any questions about the retailing maximum and its upper threshold may reach out to the Tax Division with questions or file an amended tax return at any time.
