REPORT HATE CRIMES

The City of Kent is a diverse, progressive, and inclusive city. We are committed to the safety of all our residents and visitors in our city and want to ensure the community that hate crimes in any form will not be tolerated.

The Kent PD Safe Space Program offers victims of hate crimes shelter if they are feeling unsafe.  It provides places in our community where they can seek shelter, call 911 and wait safely until officers arrive.  Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, the Kent PD Safe Place program decals provide a visual clue for anyone experiencing violence or harassment based on their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.

The Kent Police Department has adopted the Safe Place model created by the Seattle Police Department in 2015. Kent PD Safe Place is a law enforcement sponsored and overseen initiative that was born out of a need to address low reporting of anti-LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, bisexual, Transgender, Queer) crimes and school bullying incidents by increasing public trust in law enforcement and feelings of safety in the community.

The program was expanded in 2018 to include anyone who may have been a victim of a bias crime. Seattle PD was the first law enforcement agency in the nation to launch a program of this kind. For more information on the inception of the Safe Place program and details of what constitutes bias-related crimes, please visit Seattle PD Safe Place
