It’s October, and with a chill in the air and rainy days, it’s the perfect time to attend a performance or two as part of Kent’s Spotlight Series. The City of Kent Arts Commission is pleased to offer two excellent options this month – a unique Latin and bluegrass combination from Che Apalache, as well as an evening of dazzling guitar music from California Guitar Trio and Montreal Guitar Trio.

Che Apalache – “Latingrass” on October 19

Che Apalache is a four-man “Latingrass” string band based in Buenos Aires with members from Argentina, Mexico, and the United States. The group's founder is Joe Troop (fiddle), a North Carolinian multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and composer who moved to Argentina in 2010.

While patiently carving out a niche in the local music scene, Joe taught bluegrass and old-time music for a living. That's how he met Pau Barjau (banjo), Franco Martino (guitar), and Martin Bobrik (mandolin), his most dedicated students. They quickly became picking buddies and in 2013 decided to form Che Apalache and hit the stage.

The group began as a bluegrass band, but eventually incorporated Latin American styles into their repertoire. Combining instrumental prowess with tight vocal harmonies, they have created an authentic blend of genres to reflect the nature of their lives. Evoking images from Appalachia to the Andes, their debut album, "Latingrass," is a testament to a powerful cultural and musical exchange.

Che Apalache performs on Saturday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center, 10020 SE 256th Street. Tickets are $26 general, $24 senior (60+), and $15 youth (25-). Funding support for Che Apalache’s performance comes from Pete and Pat Curran through the Kent Parks Foundation and Edward Jones.

California Guitar Trio + Montreal Guitar Trio – An evening of guitar music on October 26

Inspired by an impromptu studio session together in 2009, California Guitar Trio and Montreal Guitar Trio released a live recording and began touring together throughout North America, including a stop in Kent in early 2014.

This return engagement will feature six virtuoso guitarists from four countries – Japan, Canada, Belgium, and the United States – that fuse more than 45 years of combined performing experience into one unique six-by-six string ensemble.

California Guitar Trio’s steel-stringed guitars blend naturally with Montreal Guitar Trio’s nylon-stringed guitars on original compositions and new arrangements of progressive rock, world, jazz, and classical music. The performance takes place on Saturday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $28 general, $25 senior (60+), $15 youth (25-). Funding support for this performance comes from Pete and Pat Curran through the Kent Parks Foundation.
