WIFFCO Field Grand Opening
The New Addition to Kent Memorial Park is Now Open!
The Grand Opening of WIFFCO Field was Celebrated on July 9.
We celebrated the Grand Opening of WIFFCO Field, the new addition to Kent Memorial Park, on Tuesday, July 9. This highly anticipated project addressed a major goal in the Parks & Open Spaces Plan to add new amenities at Kent Memorial Park that complemented the overall complex.
Construction of WIFFCO Field and the renovation to the adjacent playground area took years of planning, collaboration, and an immeasurable passion to bring the first Wiffle Ball-sanctioned field to the state of Washington. The Kent Parks, Recreation & Community Services department worked directly with The Wiffle Ball Inc. on the field design, and received approval to use their name and trademarked imagery. In addition, the PRCS department teamed up with the Seattle Mariners to obtain authentic signage and the right to use Mariners designs throughout the park. Details from the Mariners can be seen in the seats surrounding the field, Dave Nieuhaus signage above home plate, the "King's Court" K's and scoreboard that memorializes Felix Hernandez's perfect game, and the "Hit it Here Cafe" and "EDGAR'S" signage in the outfield. The field name - WIFFCO Field - plays homage to Safeco Field, where the Mariners played for 20 years. In addition to WIFFCO Field, the playground renovation gave a significant update to the play area at Kent Memorial Park. The vast playground serves kids of all ages and will provide endless fun for years to come.
This project was completed by Harkness Construction, Northwest Playground Equipment, Play Creation, Highwire, and the PRCS Parks Support Services team. With their hard work, and immense support from local donors, WIFFCO Field and the renovated playground were able to come to fruition. The PRCS department sends a special "Thank You" to The Kent Lions Club, who generously donated $25,000, and King County Parks, who awarded the PRCS department with $75,000, to support the project through the King County Youth & Amateur Sports Grant program.
These improvements have provided additional safe, welcoming, and fun spaces to Kent Memorial Park that will be enjoyed for many years.
