All volunteers must register to participate.

Registration will open for the season close to spring (season runs March - November). To register, fill out the volunteer registration form located at the bottom of this page.
Please note: Registration form is only live when registration is open. 

Register for just yourself, or sign up a group of up to 10 volunteers! Please register by 5 p.m. the day before an event. Please note: If you register after 12:00 p.m. the day before the event, you may not receive the pre‑event email containing supplies, parking information, and other important details. 

In addition to registration, all attendees must have a completed VOLUNTEER EVENT WAIVER FORM in order to participate. Registration is also available onsite on the day of each event (available 30 minutes before events begin). You are welcome to walk up and sign a waiver day-of if you are 18 or older.

Participants age 17 and younger must have a parent or legal guardian complete their waiver. Participants age 13 and younger must be accompanied and supervised by an adult during events.

Natural areas in Kent parks offer a refuge from our urban environment and contribute to ecosystems that we benefit from. Trees and green spaces can improve air and water quality, reduce erosion and water run-off, provide food and shelter for wildlife, create an attractive community, and increase overall quality of life.

Invasive species such as non-native blackberry and ivy can invade these spaces by outcompeting native plants and degrading the environment. With the support of our volunteers, we can help maintain healthy, resilient ecosystems by removing invasive species, mulching, and planting native trees and shrubs. Restoring and conserving these natural areas keep our parks beautiful and green!

Green Kent events are hosted and led by City of Kent Parks employees who will share knowledge about the plants and restoration area. Volunteers help restore and conserve Kent's natural areas using non-power hand tools, plants, and mulch provided by the City. These events will take place in various Kent parks and trails, rain or shine* and City employees monitor weather conditions.

Events may include physical activities such as: 

• Removing non-native and unwanted plant species.
• Planting native plant species including grasses, shrubs, and trees.
• Spreading mulch around cleared areas and/or new plants to help prevent new weed growth. 

*Kent Parks Inclement Weather Policy applies to all Green Kent events.

For safety purposes, volunteers are required to wear the following: 

• Clothes they don’t mind getting dirty or torn.  
• Sturdy, closed-toed shoes or boots with socks. Sandals and flip-flops are not allowed.
• Long pants or clothes that will protect legs from thorns.
• Leather or rubber work gloves. Gloves will be provided by the City of Kent, but we ask that volunteers bring their own if they have them.

Events are held rain or shine. To be best prepared, we recommend you also bring: 

• Warm layers and rain gear (as needed) or gear for warm weather
• A full water bottle
• Snacks 
• Sunscreen and/or bug spray (as needed).

Green River Coalition (GRC) collaborates with communities, municipalities, nonprofits, educational institutions, and other agencies to protect and enhance the Green River and our watershed. • Why are Kent Parks Volunteer Conservation events now called "Green Kent" events?
  • In 2009, the City of Kent and the Cascade Land Conservancy (now Forterra) formed the Green Kent Partnership with a vision of creating, “a city with invasive-free, sustainable parks and natural areas.”
  • From 2009-2018, we held Green Kent events and had Volunteer Stewards who helped coordinate those events and were approved to conduct ecological restoration activities outside of specific event times. 
  • Today, Kent Parks has a newly formed Natural Resources Management team, housed in our Park Operations division, to manage our natural areas and urban forest trees, and we are re-launching the Green Kent program. This program will have a new look, but the same mission!
    
    
• Can I volunteer for community service hours or school-required volunteer hours?
  • School-required hours – Yes. Please bring your form to the event and staff will sign it at the end of the day.
  • Court-ordered community service – Maybe. We are not able to coordinate an entire body of hours outside these events to meet any court-ordered requirements. Staff can sign off confirming an individual's attendance and participation at a pre-scheduled event.
    
    
• Does the event get canceled it it's raining?
  • Nope! Our events are held rain or shine.
    • If there is potential for hazardous weather prior to the event (lightning, unsafe air quality, flooding, site access), we will email all volunteers who have registered, post an update on social media, and update the website.
    • If hazardous weather arrives during the event, Kent Parks staff will defer to our Inclement Weather Policy for guidance. 
      
      
• Are these events kid-friendly? Is there a minimum age requirement? 
  • Yes, kids are more than welcome! Participants under the age of 14 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at the event. Participants age 17 and younger must have a parent or legal guardian complete their waiver. 
    
    
• What is the minimum age for a child/minor to attend alone? 
  • 14 years old with a parent or legal guardian signed waiver.
    
    
• Can I help by coordinating my own project with Kent Parks (Eagle Scouts, interns, individual volunteers, corporate groups, etc.?)
  • Events outside of Kent Parks scheduled volunteer events are done on a case-by-case basis depending on project need and staff capacity. Please reach out to ParksConservation@kentwa.gov for more information. 
    
    
• Are there other ways to volunteer at the City of Kent?
