S. 228th St. Grade Separation at Union Pacific Railroad

Project Description:

S. 228th Street will be reconstructed as an overpass spanning over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and the Interurban Trail. The S. 228th Street grade separation at the UPRR crossing will provide a regional connection between the nation’s 4th largest warehouse and industrial center in Kent with the Ports of Tacoma and Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport.  It will also eliminate daily traffic delays and provide a safer route for freight haulers and commuters at the crossing.

  • The overpass  will be approximately 1,400 feet long from beginning to end
  • Will include a 200 foot long bridge spanning the railroad and Interurban Trail
  • Will utilize approximately 72,000 cubic yards of fill
  • The roadway will be 4 - 5 lanes wide with sidewalks on both sides
  • Includes new bicycle and pedestrian connections to the Interurban Trail.

Recent Progress:

Phases 4 and 5 are currently in construction.  Phase 3 Utility improvements were completed east of the railroad in 2018-2019, phase 2 utility relocations west of railroad were completed in 2017 and phase 1 center pier bridge shafts were installed in 2016.

228th Street and the Interurban trail will be closed to through traffic for the majority of construction, detour routes will be posted.

September, 2019: The Interurban Trail is temporarily reopened for use in the north and south direction at this time. Access to and from S. 228th St (East and West) remains closed for the foreseeable future. Trail detour signs remain up for those choosing to avoid the construction zone. Trail users are advised to use extra caution while passing through the active construction zone and remain within the defined boundaries of the trail.

The next anticipated Interurban Trail closure is expected to occur late fall/early winter when large scale overhead structural bridge work begins. Advanced notice will be provided along the trail when that time becomes more defined. Thank you for the continued patience and understanding while the City and its Contractor work to safely balance the many competing demands associated with execution of a large scale project like this.
