Capital improvement, right-of-way and infrastructure projects

Project Description:

This project is part of the City of Kent’s Drainage Master Plan and also part of the Valley Creek Channel Reestablishment Project. The goals of the Drainage Master Plan are to reduce flood risks, improve water quality, enhance fish passage and in stream/riparian habitats, and efficiently serve planned growth. The goal of this project is to reestablish the original creek bottom elevation and channel capacity of Mill Creek. Due to environmental policies, sediment removal in Mill Creek has been limited to in and around culverts. This project will see accumulated sediment removed from stretches of the creek to increase water capacity and reduce flood risk.

Current Plans are Considering:

  • Removal of accumulated sediment to reduce flood risk and increase flood storage along Mill Creek throughout the Kent valley
  • Diversion of Mill Creek away from homes and into nearby wetland property north of James Street and east of Kent Memorial Park to increase flood storage and reduce the risk of flood damage to surrounding properties
  • Installation of native plants, trees, and shrubs to improve wetland and stream habitat
  • Addition of a nature trail and access point for passive recreational and educational opportunities

Preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is underway.  Once the EIS is completed, permits will be acquired and construction will begin.
