Transforming Meeker Street
The next phase of the "Meet Me on Meeker" project is here. We're extending the improvements on Meeker St. building a more connected and user-friendly corridor for the Kent community, with construction starting in Spring 2026. Utility companies are doing work on Meeker Street prior to the start of the City's contractor.

What is happening?
The City of Kent is extending the successful "Meet Me on Meeker" improvements along the south side of Meeker Street from Washington Avenue S to the Interurban Trail (please see project map). This project will improve conditions and accessibility for everyone, creating a more walkable, bikeable, and beautiful street that connects our community.

For Pedestrians: A More Pleasant Walk

  • Wider sidewalks with planted buffer strips create more space from multimodal users.
  • High-visibility crosswalks with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) increase driver awareness of people crossing.
  • A raised intersection and curbless corners at 7th Ave S provide more direct and visible crossings.

For Cyclists: A Separated Connection to the Interurban Trail

  • Wider sidewalks with planted buffer strips create more space from multimodal users.
  • A two-way separated bikeway provides a dedicated and protected space for cyclists of all ages and abilities.
  • Link to the Interurban Trail System

For Drivers: Smoother, More Predictable Travel

  • A new compact roundabout at Lincoln Ave S will reduce conflict points and keep traffic moving smoothly and efficiently. The medians and center islands can be driven over to can accommodate large trucks

For the Community: An Enhanced Streetscape

  • The project includes new trees, plantings, and on-street parking to beautify the corridor and support local businesses.

Why a roundabout?
Roundabouts improve traffic flow because their design features fewer conflict points and naturally calms vehicle speeds, simplifying decision-making for drivers. Compact roundabouts, such as the one used in this project, require minimal additional pavement and include center islands that large trucks can drive over to make it easier to navigate.

What will the finished project look like?
The new improvements will match the look and feel of the completed "Meet Me on Meeker" section west of Washington Ave. You can see a preview of the quality and style by visiting that area today!

How will this affect access to my home or business?
Direct access to all properties will be maintained throughout construction. While the main road will be eastbound only, crews will ensure you can always reach your destination.

When will this project take place?
This project is anticipated for Spring 2026 - Fall 2027. As the project moves forward, more specific information on the construction schedule will be available.

What can be expected?
Temporary construction inconveniences such as traffic congestion, temporary lane closures and restrictions, construction noise and activity are to be expected.  Traffic control including flaggers will minimize traffic disruptions.  Please use caution when traveling through work zones.

Major Traffic Impacts During Construction:

  • ONE-WAY TRAFFIC: Meeker St. will be EASTBOUND ONLY from Washington Ave to Smith St.
  • DETOUR: Westbound traffic will be detoured via James St.
  • FULL CLOSURE: The intersection of Meeker St. and 7th Ave S will be closed.

Access to all homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
