State law provides that all correspondence sent to elected officials (including email) is public record. Any correspondence sent to the City Council will be disclosed to any person who requests it, unless exempt from disclosure under state law.

The seven-member City Council is the legislative forum for the City of Kent. Besides establishing policies and regulations, the Council approves financial expenditures and the City's biennial budget.
Elected by Kent voters during odd-numbered years, councilmembers serve four-year terms. They are are non-partisan (they do not represent political parties) and are elected at-large (they do not represent a specific geographical area). All receive a monthly salary, plus reimbursement for any expenses.
