Kent urban tree advocate honored for volunteer efforts

February 12, 2013 – The city of Kent’s Green Kent Partnership is honored to announce that Terry Hooks was selected as one of 10 nationwide semi-finalists for the Alliance for Community Trees 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award.  The award highlights inspirational volunteers in action who have contributed to urban forestry by improving community trees and the neighborhoods where they live.  The winner was Dotti Clune, a 20-plus-year volunteer with Michigan-based Friends of Grand Rapids Parks.

Kent's Community Garden P-Patch Pre-registration Begins Soon

 

February 4, 2013 – Kent’s downtown Community Garden P-patch season runs April 1 through October 27. Gardeners may rent a 20’ by 20’ plot for the season for $45 plus a refundable $25 deposit. Pre-registration for returning gardeners begins Wednesday,  February 27; new gardener registration begins Monday, March 11. Call the Kent Commons at 253-856-5000, or stop by in person at 525 4th Avenue S.

Lake Meridian Park Adds New ADA Play Equipment

October 4, 2012 – The new playground at Lake Meridian Park, which opened in 2011, is being expanded to provide more opportunities for children of all abilities. Kent Parks’ Operations staff recently installed one of two new ADA accessible sand play features.  A sand table and sand digger were purchased with a $3,930 grant from the Kent Sunrise Rotary Club and Rotary District 5030.

Historic Kent Homestead Celebrates Milestone

July 25, 2011 – This year marks the 10th anniversary of a ribbon-cutting ceremony that opened up the Neely-Soames Historic Homestead to the public for the first time.  The King County Master Gardeners will help Kent Parks celebrate at the annual public open house and tour, Saturday, August 20, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at 5311 S. 237th Place, just north of the Russell Road Athletic Complex.Read More >
